Module 6: Science Education in the Philippine Society
Lessons 13: Medical Literacy
Research is frequently identified to be of big importance for its links to technology and industry which in turn, from a national point of view, may be areas with high priority to get development. Countries wanting to improve their people's quality lifestyle cannot get away the need to harness their scientific research and technology capability as a way of producing competitiveness. Consequently, science is included as a primary element in general and supplementary levels despite conceptual intricacy and very high cost implementation. One other justification for the add-on of science in secondary school curricular is the fact all residents need to acquire a degree of " scientific literacy” to enable them to participate effectively since citizens in modern communities. It is, consequently , important to be guided by simply past and present experience in scientific research education to recognize the turning items for the country's future which we have to decide right now. Studies show however , that many of our Philippine learners are not attaining functional literacy, devoid of which they find it too challenging to meet the challenges posed by each of our rapid changing world.
Medical literacy is known as a related principle to concern of social and technological literacy (a term used in recognition of the relationship between science and technology in everyday life). Some technological educators have attempted to establish or assess it. The word вЂscientific literacy' has been employed in the books for more than 4 decades (Gullagher and Harsch, 1997) while not always with all the same which means (Bybee, 1997). Benjamin Shen (1983) differentiates 3 types of technological literacy: functional, civic, and scientific cultural literacy.
Functional scientific literacy is that sort of scientific and technical reassurance that can be put to use to help solve practical challenges. The example given is the lowering of the reliance on infant formulae. Also, the use of alternative medicines like natural plants instead of synthetic types to prevent the cause of side effects which have been harmful to a person's health.
Civic scientific literacy enables the citizens to become more mindful of science and science related issues so that he can face problems with practical. Shen specifies civic technological literacy as " a level of comprehension of scientific terms and constructs sufficient to... understand the fact of competitive arguments on a given question on controversy”. An example prevalent in many countries today is the growing concern regarding the environment particularly the pollution of air, drinking water and terrain. Media include contributed very much to this sort of awareness by bringing to public interest the activities of active environmental groups. However such worries are more strong and numerous in developed countries than in expanding countries. It is time that individuals of growing countries became more conscious and attentive to such issues.
The third form is social scientific literacy. People who seek out this form of scientific literacy desire to understand something about science as a major human achievements. This group would come mostly through the intellectual community, those who watch television courses like Volkswagen, Invention and similar breakthrough documentaries.
The widely publicized subjects derive from the notion that scientific literacy has several components (Hodson) 1 . В В В В В В substantive ideas with technology
2 . В В В В В В the nature of medical activity
a few. В В В В В В role of technology in culture and traditions
Norris and Philips(2003) argue that the term " scientific literacy” has been utilized to include several components from the following: a. )   Familiarity with the hypostatic content of science as well as the ability to separate from nonscience; b. )   Understanding technology and its applications;
c. )В В В Knowledge of what counts since science;
d. )В В В Independence in learning scientific research;
e. )В В В Ability to think scientifically;
